depends on what you want. I actually recently got a Savage and really like it for around the city commuting. It is really well suited for what I use it for and it gets great gas mileage and what's more it looks great. If you search around a bit you will find many very positive reviews about the savage. You won't find reviews saying that the Savage is the last bike you will ever own but from everyone I have talked to and read reviews from, the Savage is touted as a bulletproof, easy to maintain, simple cruiser that you can get without paying enormous payments. The V-star classic although heavier, I have found carries the extra weight extremley well. Very well balanced, gets about the same gas mileage, pipes sound great - that classic v-twin sound. You can also get the V-star in the 650 cc range so it won't scare you too much. Really all depends on which one you feel more comfortable on. If you feel like that extra two hundred pounds on the V-star will be too hard to handle go for the Savage. If you want an engine with a bit more umph, especially getting in the mid-range, get the v-star. Word to the wise though, the savage is infamous for its lack of aftermarket parts. THe V-star on the other hand has more than you could ever afford and it has only been out for about four years - versus the nearly 1 and a half decades the Savage has been out. Good shopping!
